Description & Learning objectives

In the UK there is a high number of children from black and minority ethnic origins in care and the numbers are increasing over time. This course is a guide to understanding race, ethnicity, and identity. The course will look at how carers can meet their children’s needs, so that they can go on to grow into healthy adults who are confident and proud of who they are. Additionally, this course will discuss what to do should a child in care experience racism.

The learning objectives are as follows:

  • To understand race, ethnicity, and identity
  • To know how to help a young person develop a positive racial identity
  • To know how to create a more positive environment
  • To know how to find commonality and acknowledge positive differences
  • To understand practical advice

This course is CPD accredited and is specifically for anyone working within the Leaving Care sector. It is also tailored to where you live in the UK, adhering to each country’s own individual regulators - namely: Ofsted, The Care Inspectorate (Wales), The Care Inspectorate (Scotland), and The Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority (Northern Ireland).
